BRITS BAN HOME PARTIES
20th December 2005
As Christmas looms large on the horizon, this year's party season looks set to be a damp squib according to new research from Lloyds TSB Insurance. The sobering survey findings reveal that four out of five Brits will follow in Scrooge's footsteps this year by banning parties from their own homes.
Runaway costs emerge as the number one reason for staying home alone, with over a quarter of cash strapped Brits (26.4 per cent) citing the expense of hosting a party as a major turn-off. However, almost one in five house proud homeowners (14.7 per cent) cite the risk of damage to their property as the reason for locking their doors and saying bah humbug to a party at home.
Interestingly, anxious male respondents lose more sleep over the prospect of Christmas domestic carnage than woman (16.2 per cent v 14 per cent) and even the traditional party heavyweights, the 16-24 year olds, claim to be too concerned about damaging their homes to risk throwing a party. Slade, mistletoe and mince pies are no match for the nation's obsession with home improvement!
Phil Loney, managing director, Lloyds TSB Insurance says: "It's little wonder Jingle Bells are turning to alarm bells when it come to ...cont/
hosting a party at home. With the risk of damage to carpets, curtains and furniture increasing when spirits are raised, more and more of us are unwilling to add the cost of domestic repairs to the final bill for Christmas celebrations.
"However, if you are planning to host a party there are some simple things you can do to reduce the risks of wine being spilled and tears being shed. Ensuring your home contents insurance is in place can help safeguard your property and your wallet if things do get messy."
Lloyds TSB Insurance is offering the following advice to help minimise the risk of Christmas domestic damage:
. Drinks anyone? - Serve drinks in disposable glasses to prevent breakages that can rip carpets and couches, scratch furniture and cause painful injuries - both on the night and the morning after.
. Party planning - Plan to avoid damage. Look for and eliminate potential danger spots before the party and have an emergency mop up kit to use if necessary .
. Know your boundaries - Create a party boundary and keep guests within it - that way you can remove possible hazards from the area and keep an eye on enthusiastic partying guests.
. Light my fire - If you're setting the scene with candles, make sure

they aren't near the tree, wrapped presents or draughty windows and be sure to keep candles away from dancing, or stumbling guests.
. Playing secret Santa? - Don't throw used wrapping paper in the fire - flash fires may occur as wrapping paper ignites suddenly and burns intensely .
. Safe sparkles - Make sure your decorative lights have the CE mark of approval, the manufacturer's declaration that the product satisfies European Safety Regulations. Check for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and be sure to turn off all lights and decorations before going to bed to prevent them from shorting and starting fires.
. Get fresh - If you're opting for an artificial Christmas tree make sure it's fire resistant, but if you can't resist the smell of pine, make sure your real tree is fresh and keep it watered - dry trees are much more of a fire hazard
