Footspas bubble
Footspas bubble to top esure's £3.1bn* useless gadgets list.
(27th September 2004)
Three quarters of UK adults spend, on average, £73.85 on household items they once believed would be invaluable but have rarely, if ever, used since, according to research by esure home insurance**.
Esure's annual useless gadgets poll reveals the most pricey useless gadget in the UK is now the footspa. Costing on average £50 each and owned by one fifth of adults, the total value of unused footspas owned by UK homes now tops £450m***. The top five 'thought useful but hardly ever used' objects by value in 2004 is:
With 40% of people refusing to get rid of these rarely-used gadgets, Britain's kitchen cupboards and homes are now bulging with useless goods worth £3.1bn*. In terms of their home contents insurance cover, it could mean that thousands of people are, unknowingly, under estimating their contents value.
Nikki Sellers, head of esure home insurance, said: "It's easy to quantify all the things we love in our home and equally as easy to forget the value of the dust-gathering gadgets and objects that we never use. We would encourage everyone to keep ...cont/
an inventory of their home contents for insurance purposes."
Esure's poll also reveals that, for the second year running, the humble sandwich toaster is the item that most people admit to owning but rarely, if ever, using. The 2004 'white elephant list' is show below:
Ranking Item % of UK adults admitting to owning but not using the item**
1 Sandwich toaster 43
2 Electric knife 23
3 Vegetable preparation devices 20
4 Footspa 19
5= Bread maker 14
5= Fondue set 14
5= Electric tin opener 14
5= Soda stream 14
9 Pasta maker 6
10 Coffee machine 2
11= Blender 1
11= Juicer 1
Nikki Sellers said: "This 'gadget mountain' of unused objects can't just be explained away by unwanted wedding and Christmas gifts. The popularity of internet shopping and browsing has probably played a large part in tempting people to purchase so-called labour saving devices, which, unfortunately, do not turn out to be as useful as originally thought."
