The morning after.
23 December 2005 - Barclays Home Insurance
Opting to have a New Year's bash in your home as a way of keeping your costs down can still leave you out of pocket when you get hit by the clearing up cost the next morning, according to new research by Barclays Insurance Services.
The research shows the savvy party organiser expects to spend on average £197.82 throwing a party to welcome in 2006, and they anticipate a bill of £78.40 to clean up afterwards. The pressure to have a good time on New Year's Eve can be intense and trying to keep up with the Jones' means you could go overboard on the lavish decorations, party themes, providing food and refreshments for all the guests.
Six per cent of people are planning on spending at least £400 on their party however party-throwers could end up shelling out more money than they originally budgeted for if they are not careful.
Adrian Grace, managing director of Barclays Insurance Services says: "A little bit of wear and tear is part and parcel of holding a party. However, as festive spirits are high and party-goers want to make sure the New Year starts with a bang, hosts may wake up with more ...cont/
than just a headache in the morning.
"By double-checking exactly what their home insurance covers them for and updating their contents insurance with any major Christmas gifts such as TVs, ornaments or jewellery, party hosts can relax and have a good time."
The research shows that, after hosting a New Year's Eve party:
-One in five of us have had to buy new glasses or crockery;
-14 per cent have had to replace or have their flooring cleaned;
-Seven per cent of hosts have had to replace a piece of furniture or curtains;
-Five per cent have had to replace electronic gadgets such as stereos or TVs;
-Four per cent have had to replace a broken window.
Given the estimated cost of replacing these items, the true cost of holding a swinging New Year's Eve party could leave the hosts paying out much more to replace damaged items. Ten per cent of party-goers have admitted that they'd own up to breaking something but wouldn't expect to pay for it, as they think the host should expect some damage as part of holding the party.
A cheeky five per cent would pretend they didn't know anything about the breakage to avoid

forking out for a replacement. Interestingly, six per cent of men would try to get away with this lie, compared to just three per cent of women.
