DON'T POISON YOUR PETS WITH TREATS THIS EASTER. 07 April 2006
While it may be tempting to include your pets in the festive feasts of Easter, pet insurer MORE TH>N is warning of the dangers of letting your pets indulge in chocolate.
Apart from the risks of obesity, sharing chocolate with your pet is more dangerous than you might think. Chocolate contains a stimulant chemical called Theobromine, which although harmless to humans, is extremely toxic to dogs. The poison affects dogs' heart, circulation and nervous systems and can lead to lung and heart failure in as little as a few hours. Just 50g of plain chocolate can be enough to kill a small dog, and while cats are not at such a high risk of chocolate poisoning as dogs, it is advised that all treats this Easter are kept out of paws' reach. Should you discover your pet has ingested chocolate, or if they start behaving unusually or showing signs of illness, MORE TH>N advises you to take them to a vet immediately.
However, your pet needn't have to miss out this Easter. MORE TH>N recommends treating your dog with specially formulated 'dog chocolates', ...cont/
which contain no trace of cocoa and are available at many pet shops. Although perfectly safe, these should be given only as occasional treats to avoid your pet becoming overweight.
Graham Hollebon, head of product for MORE TH>N, commented: "Pets are often considered part of the family, so it can be tempting to include them with treats at special times like Christmas and Easter. But it's important to remember that although dogs and cats may enjoy the taste of human food, it can cause serious health problems such as obesity, allergic reactions and, as in the case of chocolate, even poisoning.
"There is an incredibly varied range of vet-approved pet food available on the market nowadays, so you should have no problem finding a treat for your pet that is also safe and healthy. If your pet suffers any sort of adverse reaction to food, or if they develop an illness or unusual condition like a rash, it's important to see your vet to rule out any serious illnesses, and to seek appropriate treatment. Your pet will thank you for it!"
