National Riding Festival

03/04/2006 The National Riding Festival, which encourages thousands of people to take up the reins and start riding each year, has signed up one of the UK’s leading equine insurance providers, Petplan Equine, as its headline sponsor. To demonstrate its commitment both to the horse world and to encouraging participation at grass roots level, Petplan Equine’s sponsorship will see the re-introduction of the most successful activity ever undertaken by the Festival – the schools roadshow. This popular initiative will help support riding centres throughout the country to generate potential new long-term clients by attracting children who are new to riding and will see the campaign’s star turn, ‘Trigger’ the Festival’s mechanical cantering horse, touring primary schools throughout June. Support for the Festival is to be further increased this year by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) investing £15,000 of Sport England funding into this summer’s campaign in recognition of the huge inroads the Festival has made in boosting the popularity of the sport and encouraging new riders. The BEF’s investment is in line with Sport England’s primary objective to increase participation in grass roots sport and the Federation will also assist the Festival by becoming involved at management level and exploring other funding opportunities to expand the campaign in 2007.   which will see thousands of children experiencing the sport, many for the first time, by riding Trigger and taking part in other equestrian related activities such as rosette making and assembling a bridle. To further encourage new and lapsed riders to take up the reins, people will also be able to ride Trigger at a variety of events throughout the summer when he appears on the Countryside Alliance stand at Badminton Horse Trials (4 to 7 May), Bath and West Show (31 May to 3 June), Royal Show (2 to 5 July), New Forest Show (25 to 27 July), the Game Fair (28 to 30 July), Chatsworth Country Fair (2 to 3 September) and the Midland Game Fair (16 to 17 September). Running until the end of August, other initiatives taking place as part of the Festival include a national newspaper promotion offering readers free riding lessons and voucher offers in consumer magazines, enabling readers to apply for 50% off riding lessons at participating riding centres throughout the country. “We’re delighted to support the National Riding Festival which will increase the profile of equestrianism and encourage many thousands of new and lapsed riders to take up the reins,” comments Geraldine West, marketing manager for Petplan Equine. “This fantastic and worthy initiative will go a long way to support the long-term future of the sport.” Petplan Equine National Riding Festival chairman, Jane Holderness-Roddam CBE LVO, comments: “The Petplan Equine National Riding Festival has been running without a title sponsor for the

last two years which has meant that we’ve had to rein in on some of the really worthwhile initiatives such as the schools roadshow. We’re confident that with the additional support of both Petplan Equine and the BEF we’ll be able to encourage even more people to start riding, which is crucial to secure the future of the equestrian industry and all the jobs that are dependent upon it.” During the past six years, the Festival has given 27,000 children the chance to sit on a horse for the first time, visited 170 schools, attracted 57,000 spectators to Festival events, introduced 15,000 people to the sport, generated 1,055 media pieces with an audience reach of 289 million and won a marketing award. In addition to Petplan Equine and the BEF, the Festival is supported by American Quarter Horse Association UK, Association of British Riding Schools, British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA), British Equestrian Veterinary Association (BEVA), British Eventing, British Horse Society (BHS), British Reining Horse Association, Countryside Alliance, The Fortune Centre of Riding Therapy, ILPH, Mark Davies Injured Riders Fund, The Pony Club, Riding for the Disabled Association, Saddlers Company, Side Saddle Association and Society of Master Saddlers.
