(2) 1 st August 2005 Research by leading insurer MORE TH>N shows that over 500,00 dog owners are not aware that they could be held liable if their dog caused an accident or damaged someone else’s property. 83% (3) of dog owners do not have Pet Insurance and therefore may not be covered for costs if legal action was taken against them . This is especially worrying when you consider that 45% of Britons would sue the owners if their dog caused an injury. For example, Pebbles the Doberman accidentally escaped out of his premises when the owner caught the dog’s foot in the door. This caused him to bolt and Pebbles then bit a passer by on the thigh. Although the owner was not at fault he was held liable and this went to court. Without personal liability cover the total costs for this could have reached as much as £13,000.
