Tiddles could break the bank
By Alex Coakley - July 22 2005 Your furry or feathered best friend may bring you joy and companionship, but many pets are inadvertently costing their owners thousands. UK pet owners are failing to insure their furry friends and having to dig deep when Fido or Tiddles visits the vet.
We spent more that £1.24 billion on vet’s fees during 2004.
Figures from the Royal Society of Veterinary Surgeons – the specialists who actually operate on your pet – suggest their fees have risen 60% in recent years.
Counting the cost
Here are some examples of the vet’s bills you may face to get your furry friend back in shape:
Hip replacements for dogs cost up to £2,500 Stomach surgery for your pet would set you back about £900 Amputation of a rabbit’s leg cost around £600 Putting a plate in a cat’s leg cost up to £300, the x-rays a further £100 and any aftercare can add another £200. The cost of helping a pet to recover from a traffic accident can be anything from £500 to ...cont/
£2,500. Dogs that suffer from arthritis could rack up a £3,000 vet’s bill Bowel surgery and subsequent hospital care for animals that have eaten a sharp object can cost up to £1,500. Almost a quarter of owners said that if their pet’s treatment cost more than £1,500, they would consider putting it to sleep, according to SAGA Insurance.
You can protect yourself against the unexpected with health insurance, and it’s also possible to get similar protection for your pets, yet it is estimated that less than 14% of pet owners have such policies.
The UK has an army of domestic animals: 8.2 million cats, 7 million dogs, not to mention tens of thousands of horses and ponies, plus more exotic pets.
Pet owners who don’t take out cover are putting themselves at the risk of facing vet’s bills which can easily reach thousands of pounds over a lifetime.
