Don't get off to a rough start when motoring abroad says Budget

The popularity of Continental self-drive holidays is increasing, but if your car breaks down in the middle of a holiday, getting mechanical support abroad can often prove to be a difficult task, says BUDGET,
Having breakdown cover in Britain does not automatically mean that the same membership terms apply when driving abroad, which is why BUDGET is advising all self-drive travellers to arrange adequate cover, prior to their journey, to avoid encountering problems when in a foreign country.
Whilst many continental self-drive holidays can be exciting and adventurous, many drivers forget to take out car breakdown cover specifically for travelling abroad. BUDGET stresses the importance of having this cover to its customers and is happy to offer some general tips about the other aspects of motoring abroad, which can affect the British driver's holiday.
To ensure that you stay safe when driving on the Continent, use the following checklist:

Plan your journey in advance, by listening to radio reports for any delays or road closures that may delay your scheduled border crossing.
Make sure that you have the basic equipment when touring abroad including heavy-duty jump leads, a strong towrope, a first aid kit, torch, a triangle and a fire extinguisher.
Most European countries require you to carry a red warning triangle in the event of an accident or breakdown. All vehicles in Spain must also carry a spare fan belt and a full set of spare bulbs, as well as the tools needed to change them.
Always display a GB sticker on the rear of your vehicle - a legal requirement when driving abroad.
If driving on the right, you'll also need a set of headlight converters so that your lights dip away from oncoming traffic - This is a legal requirement in many countries.

Each county has it's own laws and regulations which cover, for example, road taxes payable, what equipment you must carry, the use of seat belts and the position of child passengers.
