19/10/2005 With more than 20 million people set to take a short break this Autumn research from Post Office ® travel services has revealed that people find getting ready for short breaks so stressful, they may need a holiday just to recover from the preparations! Despite short breaks requiring the same basic level of preparation as a two-week holiday, travellers place a much higher priority on organising a longer trip with 68 per cent allowing over a month to prepare. Nearly half of all UK “short breakers” (46 per cent) experience high levels of stress while packing, perhaps not surprising when 61 per cent leave less than a week to prepare for their trip. The research also revealed that the factors triggering holiday hang-ups vary between men and women. Men’s concerns focus around arranging sightseeing and entertainment activities when they reach their holiday destination (22 per cent), while house-proud women fret more about sorting out the house before they depart (13 per cent). Men are also more likely to take risks with 34 per cent admitting that they would not take out insurance for a short break, a third of these saying it’s because they are not going away for long enough to need it or because nothing has ever happened to them before when travelling overseas. While Scots like to travel safely with 84 per cent saying they take out travel insurance for their short break, Londoners prefer life on the edge with just over half (58 per cent) seeking adequate cover for their trip. Perhaps it’s the hectic city lifestyle that results in nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of Londoners finding short breaks stressful to prepare for. In comparison just over a third (39 per cent) of relaxed South Westerners say they are worried about preparing for their trip.
