Sun, sea and sand and safety stress
• 70 per cent of parents worry about their children having accidents yet only 13 per cent organise travel insurance as a priority
• Nearly a third of families have experienced accidents or illness overseas
• One in ten consider travel insurance no more important than cleaning the house Parents are failing to prepare adequately for their family holidays according to the latest research by Post Office® travel services. For one in ten parents, organising their travel insurance is considered no more important than cleaning the house when preparing for a family holiday. Despite this lack of preparation, children’s safety remains a major concern for parents during a family holiday, with nearly three quarters (70 per cent) worrying about accidents and injuries and two-thirds (66 per cent) concerned about illness. However, the study reveals that only a third of parents will feel suitably prepared for their family holiday this summer and that just 13 per cent will prioritise travel insurance as part of their planning. Nearly a third (31 per cent) of parents say they have experienced an accident or an illness whilst on holiday, and a further 24 per cent have experienced loss or theft of property - so thousands of families could be at risk this summer if they fail to update their travel documents. When it comes to stress, one in five (21 per cent) find arranging travel safety precautions the most stressful part of organising a holiday. A further 24 per cent find packing for the family to be a major cause of stress while travelling to the airport is a stressful activity for 18 per cent of parents. Hugh Stacey, head of travel services at the Post Office®, said: “Preparing for a family holiday can be one of the biggest stresses of the year. Yet, as a house-proud nation we are bizarrely more concerned about cleaning the house ...cont/
than organising adequate travel insurance! Taking a small amount of time to prioritise travel essentials such as insurance, passports and E111s can reduce the worry associated with a family holiday. Our Kids Go Free and Single Parent policies are tailored to meet the needs of modern families and provide reassurance for parents when travelling with their kids.” With over four million families taking more than one trip abroad each year , the Post Office® is urging parents to ensure they are fully prepared for family travel. Mums Vs Dads The study amongst UK parents confirms the theory that women worry more than men, with almost a quarter (24 per cent) concerned that they don’t know enough about their destination, compared to just 16 per cent of men. Furthermore, over a quarter (29 per cent) of mums stress about packing for all the family, compared to 18 per cent of men. It’s not just the mums who suffer from holiday anxieties; Dads worry about the journey to their destination, with 22 per cent claiming that travelling to the airport is the most stressful part of preparing for a holiday, compared to just 15 per cent of women. Hugh Stacey added: “Our research shows that families have a lot of stress prior to travel, with things like packing, cleaning the house and getting to their destinations. However, worries about family safety could be significantly reduced if parents prepare travel documents well in advance of the holiday. “The Post Office® offers guidance that could prevent families getting into difficulty overseas.” Family Holiday Checklist;

• Get adequate insurance - you''ll need cover for the full duration of your trip, for all activities (some sports such as skiing require extra insurance), for medical costs and getting home in emergencies. Tell your insurer if you have any medical conditions. Take the policy number and the emergency phone number.
• Ensure the whole family is covered – some insurers offer kids go free and single parent family policies which provide cover for all the family.
• Take enough money and a mix of different payment methods - check your credit card doesn''t run out, take Travellers Cheques and make a note of the numbers.
• Make sure your passport is valid for a minimum of six months and that you have any visas you may need. Photocopy your passport and take one copy with you, keeping it separate from your actual passport, and leave another copy at home. Remember that all family members must have their own passport.
• Stay healthy - check what vaccinations you need with your GP at least six weeks before you go, and if you''re on medication, make sure it''s legal in the countries you''re visiting. Pack medicines in your hand baggage.
• Obtain a valid E111 if you''re travelling in the European Economic Area. Since 31st December 2004 all family members are now required to have their own E111. Forms are available at your local Post Office® branch.
