Cars are not only more affordable these days, but first time car buyers seem to be more image conscious and want the latest makes and models compared to a decade or so ago, when first time cars were often ‘old bangers’. The majority (68%) of young people today will drive a small saloon or hatchback 167 as their first motor, whereas around 30 years ago a greater number of new drivers chose a medium sized saloon or hatchback (30% versus 18%). High costs for young drivers
With the cost of buying and running a car nearing £5,700* in its first year, joining the car-ladder is out of reach for many wannabe motorists, with university costs (21 per cent of those who can drive but do not own a car), debt (12 per cent) and low wages (42 per cent) as the top three unavoidable 51 expenses preventing them from getting a car of 51 their own.
