Avoid Rodent Invasion
Avoid rodent invasion
Be prepared and avoid rodent invasion during March’s deep-freeze week, esure.com urges homeowners to protect their homes - not only from the cold - but also from unwanted guests
(28 February 2006)
esure.com - the first insurer to launch pest insurance for the removal of five common pests from the home – warns homeowners to take simple precautions to avoid a rodent infestation with temperatures set to plummet and the likelihood of snow set to rise.
According to research by ICM, one in ten * (11%) UK homeowners have had a pest problem in the last 12 months and have faced an unwelcome bill for pest removal, and it’s the winter months when homes are most at risk from infestation from rodents such as mice, rats and squirrels. When temperatures drop, rodents look for a means of escaping the cold. They also ‘head indoors’ when hard frosts or snow-cover cut off crucial food supplies.
To prepare you ahead of the cold snap - esure.com offers homeowners some top tips to prevent a rodent infestation and safeguard their homes from structural and contents damage, and protect themselves from encountering health problems through the diseases they carry and the allergic responses they can trigger.

1) Don’t provide them with a food source
Get rid of any food that may attract them: clean up spilled rubbish, always store pet or bird food in sealed containers, put rubbish bags in dustbins with lids, and sweep up ‘bird seed’ underneath feeders or around bird tables.
2) Don’t help them build their nests
Clear out your loft: packing tissue, unwanted clothes or cuddly toys, and cardboard boxes are ideal nesting materials.
3) Don’t let them get in
Make your home ‘Fort Knox’: fix and replace cracked or broken doors or windows and make sure that drains and drain covers are in a good state of repair.
Seal up holes – particularly around pipework: mice travel around your home by following pipes and wiring. Use steel wool, copper mesh or plaster to fill holes and, in particular, seal up the gaps surrounding hot water pipes to prevent them from entering airing cupboards.
4) Don’t attract them in the first place
Remove mouse hiding places: de-clutter your garden by getting rid of leaves, wooden planks or boards, pipes, and scraps of wood. Cut back weeds and mow areas of tall grass.
