Holidaying To Excess

Holidaying to excess

Holidaying to excess - Britons load up planes with extra shopping.

12 August 2005 - Barclays

Almost half of women in the UK (46 per cent) admit to needing an extra bag to carry their excess shopping home from holidays overseas, according to Barclays Bank Insurance research released today. Barclays is urging shoppers to be aware of how much their suitcase will be worth on their return to the UK - and how much they stand to lose if their uninsured or underinsured luggage gets lost.

Shopping meccas around the world are now proving to be more popular than the beaches as holiday destinations. New figures from Barclays reveal that Britons are visiting shopping cities such as Paris, New York and Dublin in their droves. Barclays data indicates that last year British shoppers spent at least 285million in Paris; 275million in New York and 250million in Dublin.*

According to the survey by Barclays General Insurance, almost a quarter (23 per cent) of all holidaymakers surveyed admit to being forced to buy a new bag on holiday and one in five (20 per cent) admit to taking a spare bag with them to help carry home all their new purchases.**

Adrian Grace, managing director of Barclays Insurance, comments: "Many of us succumb to that splurging feeling whilst we're on holiday but it's surprising that many people plan for the mass holiday spending by taking extra luggage with them. However, holidaymakers need to understand that they should have comprehensive and up-to-date travel insurance to cover their pre and post-shopping luggage and remember, keep receipts of any spending in case you need to claim."

What is the cost of your suitcase contents?
Whilst the average cost of an outbound suitcase stands at 1,307 for a woman and 1,004 for a man***, the survey results show that return suitcases increased in value on average by 170 with goodies holidaymakers purchased when abroad.* This means holidaymakers experiencing a lost luggage dilemma may be shocked that it's not only their new clothes that they're missing, but they could end up out of pocket if underinsured.
